Back in the 90s, CGI was a pretty novelty, that being the idea that something in the film is really there. Blockbusters and video games took advantage of this as well. Transformers 2 had the T-1000, which pretty much revolutionised the technology and dramatically increased interest in it, Jurassic Park had CGI so impressive that even today we find it hard to differentiate between the CG and the animatronics at times. During the "bit-wars", Nintendo made an upgrade for the SNES called the Super FX chip, which let the console use 3-D graphics, then the N64 and Playstation came out and revolutionised 3-D gaming. So at the height of all the 3-D animation hype, it was a perfect time for the very first CG animated feature to be made. Toy Story showed what the technology was capable of, not just through animation but story-telling as well. With the well-written and memorable characters, the clever humour, and brilliant animation, this left such a strong interest in computer animation that it still exists today.
